The Providence Center Intensive Outpatient and Substance Use Services operates through the organization’s adult treatment system at 530 North Main Street in Providence. Intensive outpatient treatment is intended for adults who need more structure than weekly counseling but who can continue living at home. The program can serve people beginning substance use treatment or stepping down from residential, hospital, or partial-hospital care.
Intensive Outpatient Structure
Intensive outpatient programs generally provide several hours of clinical treatment on multiple days each week. The Providence Center has historically offered ASAM Level 2.1 substance use IOP services, including programs that combine mental health and addiction treatment. Current schedules and program tracks should be confirmed through intake.
Clients return home after treatment sessions, allowing them to maintain employment, family responsibilities, education, and community connections. The greater frequency of contact helps staff monitor progress, respond to recurrence risks, and adjust treatment before a person requires hospitalization or residential care.
Individual and Group Treatment
IOP services may include individual counseling, group therapy, substance use education, relapse-prevention planning, toxicology screening, psychiatric support, medication management, and family involvement. Group sessions provide education, peer feedback, accountability, and opportunities to practice communication and coping skills.
Individual counseling allows clients to address personal concerns privately. Treatment may focus on cravings, trauma, grief, relationships, stress, legal issues, employment, and the thoughts or situations connected with alcohol or drug use. The treatment plan is reviewed as symptoms, risks, and goals change.
Co-Occurring Mental Health Conditions
The Providence Center treats psychiatric illness, emotional problems, and substance use within the same community system. Adults with depression, anxiety, trauma-related symptoms, serious mental illness, or other conditions can receive coordinated care. Psychiatric evaluation and medication management may be included when clinically appropriate.
Integrated care is important because untreated mental health symptoms can increase the risk of continued substance use. Likewise, alcohol or drug use can make psychiatric symptoms more difficult to evaluate and manage. The care team considers both conditions when planning treatment and continuing support.
Recovery and Step-Down Planning
Clients may use IOP as a transition from Roads to Recovery residential treatment or another structured program. As stability improves, treatment may step down to standard outpatient counseling, medication management, peer recovery support, or community meetings. Anchor Recovery Community Center and other Providence Center services can provide additional peer and practical support.
If IOP is not sufficient, staff can recommend residential treatment, crisis stabilization, or hospital care. The ability to connect clients with several levels of treatment can reduce gaps when needs change.
Insurance and Intake
Program schedules, insurance networks, and authorization requirements can change. Adults seeking intensive outpatient substance use treatment should call The Providence Center’s intake department at 401-276-4020. Staff can confirm current IOP availability, assessment procedures, insurance coverage, and whether another level of care is more appropriate.
