Alcohol prevention
All Prevention staff are Master level therapists, intervention specialists and coordinators. In addition, coordinators that implement The Corner Theater Troupe must possess a theater background. Staff are trained in current evidenced-based prevention programs such as Screening, Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT), Motivational Interviewing, Teen Intervene and The Corner Theater Troupe/Peer Education Program.
The Prevention team integrates strategies such as early intervention with individuals that have experimented with substances or at risk for substance abuse. The team identifies and works with the protective factors in various domains such as: a) at the individual level; b) in the family including living with parents able to meet their children’s affective needs; c) at school which includes school adherence; d) among peers such as close peers with a low tolerance of drug use; e) in the community linking services in order to provide a strong social network. Further work is completed in broad contextual factors such as inequity, poverty, neighborhood disorganization, lack of health and social services, availability of substances (working with local coalitions). Staff develop presentations that are representative of all protective factors in order to educate both teens and adults.
