Butler Hospital is a psychiatric and substance use treatment hospital located at 345 Blackstone Boulevard in Providence. The nonprofit hospital is part of Care New England and serves adolescents, adults, and older adults through inpatient, partial hospital, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient, and urgent behavioral health programs. Butler is also a teaching hospital affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Behavioral Health Assessment and Urgent Care
People who are unsure which level of care they need can begin with Butler’s Behavioral Health Service Call Center or Butler Express Care. Express Care provides walk-in and same-day assessment for adults experiencing worsening depression, anxiety, substance use, medication concerns, or other behavioral health symptoms that do not require an emergency department. Clinicians evaluate current symptoms, safety risks, treatment history, medications, and available support before recommending a plan.
When symptoms are severe or safety cannot be maintained in the community, Butler provides inpatient psychiatric and addiction treatment. People whose needs can be managed outside the hospital may be referred to partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, standard outpatient treatment, or a community provider.
Alcohol and Drug Treatment
Butler operates a hospital-based continuum for adults with alcohol and drug use disorders. Services include medically supervised inpatient withdrawal management, an alcohol and drug partial hospital program, intensive outpatient care, outpatient counseling, ambulatory detoxification, and a recovery stabilization program for opioid use disorder.
Inpatient addiction care provides medical and nursing monitoring for people who cannot complete withdrawal safely in an outpatient setting. The partial hospital program offers structured daytime treatment while patients return home in the evening. Outpatient programs provide assessment, counseling, education, family involvement, medication management, and relapse-prevention planning.
Mental Health and Co-Occurring Disorders
Butler treats mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic illnesses, obsessive-compulsive disorder, trauma-related conditions, and substance use. Because mental health symptoms and addiction frequently occur together, treatment can address both concerns within the same hospital system. Psychiatric evaluation, medication management, cognitive behavioral groups, coping-skills training, and individual counseling may be included according to the program.
Specialty services include programs for young adults, older adults, women, people with obsessive-compulsive disorder, and patients with movement or memory disorders. The appropriate service depends on age, diagnosis, symptoms, safety, and daily functioning.
Family and Continuing Care
Family members may participate when the patient provides written consent. Education and counseling can help loved ones understand symptoms, treatment recommendations, medication, and the support needed after discharge. Social workers coordinate follow-up appointments, prescriptions, outpatient treatment, community resources, and recovery groups before a hospital or partial-program episode ends.
Insurance and Access
Butler and Care New England accept many commercial and government insurance plans and offer financial assistance to eligible patients. Coverage and authorization requirements vary by program. Individuals should contact Butler’s call center to verify the recommended level of care, insurance participation, appointment availability, and whether emergency treatment is required.
