Butler Hospital Alcohol and Drug Treatment Services provides hospital-based care for adults with alcohol or drug use disorders at 345 Blackstone Boulevard in Providence. Butler is a major psychiatric teaching hospital and part of Care New England. Its addiction continuum includes medically supervised inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, intensive outpatient care, standard outpatient treatment, ambulatory detoxification, and medication-supported recovery services.
Inpatient Detoxification and Stabilization
The Alcohol and Drug Inpatient Unit provides acute treatment for adults who are actively dependent on alcohol or other drugs. Medically supervised detoxification is available for people who cannot safely complete withdrawal in an outpatient setting. Medical and nursing staff monitor symptoms, manage health risks, and help patients stabilize before the next phase of treatment.
A typical inpatient day includes meals, community meetings, therapeutic groups, Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, walking, and relaxation activities. The unit also treats people whose substance use occurs with depression, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive symptoms, post-traumatic stress, or other psychiatric conditions.
Partial Hospital and Outpatient Care
Butler’s Alcohol and Drug Partial Hospital Program provides daytime treatment Monday through Friday while allowing patients to return home in the evening. The schedule includes cognitive behavioral groups, education, skills training, individual sessions with a physician and substance use counselor, medication education, relapse-prevention planning, and family support.
Intensive outpatient and standard outpatient programs serve adults and youth age 16 and older. Adolescents and adults are grouped separately for therapy and peer support. Services include assessment, individual counseling, group therapy, education, family therapy, medical evaluation, diagnostic testing, and medication management.
Opioid Recovery Stabilization
Butler’s Recovery Stabilization Program provides long-term outpatient medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder. A physician-led team may include a nurse, therapist, and case worker. Treatment combines medication regulation, individual and group therapy, coping-skills development, and help connecting with community resources.
The team can move patients between levels of care when risk increases. A person may transition to inpatient treatment, partial hospitalization, or ambulatory detoxification and then return to the stabilization program. This coordinated model reduces gaps between hospital and outpatient services.
Family and Continuing Care
Family involvement is encouraged with the patient’s written consent. Family education and individual sessions can help loved ones understand addiction and support recovery. Discharge teams coordinate follow-up appointments, prescriptions, community treatment, and self-help programs such as Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous.
Because Butler offers several levels of addiction care on one campus, an assessment can help determine whether a person needs inpatient withdrawal management, partial hospitalization, outpatient treatment, or medication-supported stabilization. The recommended program may change as symptoms and safety needs improve.
