The joint mission of the Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse (ABADA) and the Alaska Mental Health Board (AMHB) is to advocate for programs and services that promote healthy, independent, productive Alaskans. AMHB/ABADA are statutorily charged with advising, planning, and coordinating behavioral health services and programs funded by the State of Alaska.

Alaska has treatment options and recovery supports in many communities. Every step is available in Alaska. Not everyone needs every step.​ People may need to repeat steps. People with severe addiction may need to medically stabilized or go through managed withdrawal (“detox”) before beginning treatment. To start treatment & recovery, the first step is an assessment (intake) to find the best treatment fit.

VOA Alaska’s public health and prevention programs aim to prevent youth substance misuse from occurring in the first place. Our team is on the front line of prevention, working to strengthen and promote healthy communities. We conduct regular drug information classes for youth and adults; create public education campaigns to encourage healthy behaviors and prevention; distribute tobacco quit-kits, drug disposal bags, and other prevention resources; and lead a coalition of stakeholders to produce efforts to address substance misuse.

Recover Alaska Alcohol Prevention
Recover Alaska is a multi-sector action group working to reduce excessive alcohol use and harm across the state. We make connections with healthcare providers, prevention workers, peer support specialists, and individuals seeking information and support. We elevate the conversation by raising awareness of the negative impacts of excessive alcohol consumption and advocating for legislation and policies that will help reduce alcohol misuse and create safer, healthier environments. We shift perceptions to reduce the stigma around alcohol disorders, normalize sobriety, and celebrate recovery. And, we work upstream, coordinating a statewide alcohol misuse prevention alliance for health and wellness.
