MAP Behavioral Health Services is a nonprofit addiction treatment organization located at 66 Burnett Street in Providence. Founded in 1976, MAP began as a program for men returning from military service and other adults affected by alcohol, drug use, trauma, and community instability. The organization now provides residential treatment for men, outpatient and intensive outpatient services, integrated dual-diagnosis care, case coordination, and permanent supportive housing.
Residential Treatment for Men
MAP operates a 35-bed residential program for men age 18 and older who meet clinical criteria for substance use treatment. Residential care is available around the clock and provides a stable environment for people who need more structure than outpatient counseling. Applicants must be able to participate safely in a group living and treatment setting.
Admission includes screening, review of substance use and mental health history, insurance verification, psychiatric information, medication needs, and continuity-of-care planning. MAP may request documentation from primary care and psychiatric providers so treatment can begin with accurate information and a supply of prescribed medication.
Outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Services
MAP also offers outpatient and intensive outpatient substance use treatment. Services may include day or evening programming, individual counseling, group treatment, relapse-prevention counseling, medication management, early intervention, crisis support, transportation assistance, and referral to inpatient or residential care when a higher level is needed.
The outpatient level allows clients to live in the community while attending scheduled treatment. Intensive outpatient care provides more frequent clinical contact for people who need additional structure. Treatment planning is based on DSM-5 substance use criteria and American Society of Addiction Medicine placement guidance.
Person-Centered and Culturally Responsive Care
MAP identifies person-centered therapy as the foundation of its quality-improvement approach. Clients participate in setting goals, identifying strengths, and creating measurable steps toward recovery. Staff focus on the person’s aspirations, cultural background, needs, interests, and abilities rather than treating every client through the same plan.
The organization emphasizes culturally and linguistically appropriate services. MAP’s staff reflects the communities it serves and includes bilingual clinical and case-management professionals. Treatment can address substance use alongside post-traumatic stress, depression, other mental health conditions, unemployment, homelessness, lack of income, and difficulty accessing healthcare.
Housing and Community Stability
MAP operates permanent supportive housing for adults with disabilities and helps clients address emergency or long-term housing needs. Case coordination may include medical appointments, psychiatric care, benefits, transportation, employment, and community services. These supports are important because unstable housing and untreated mental health conditions can increase the risk of recurrence.
Insurance and Admissions
MAP states that it accepts insurance including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Neighborhood Health Plan, Tufts, UnitedHealthcare, and other out-of-network coverage. Prospective clients should complete a telephone screening before arrival. Contact MAP directly to verify bed availability, outpatient schedules, insurance benefits, clinical eligibility, and the referral records needed for admission.
